Rolling Names: Migration from Visual Composer to WordPress Block Editor

Rolling Names specializes in helping companies, brands, products, and services find the perfect name. Their website, built several years ago, was powered by WordPress and relied on Visual Composer as its primary page builder. While the website served its purpose initially, it had become outdated, both in terms of user experience and performance.

Our team was brought on board to manage, optimize, and modernize the website. The primary goal of the website is to generate leads and drive sales for RollingNames’ services. To achieve this, we focused on improving the website’s performance, enhancing the content editing experience, and ensuring the site was aligned with modern web standards.

Challenge

The client frequently runs campaigns to generate leads and promote their naming services. This requires constant updates to content and the management of multiple landing pages. However, poor website performance, particularly slow load times, has been a persistent issue. These performance bottlenecks not only hinder the user experience but also negatively impact organic traffic and the effectiveness of campaigns.

Solution

We began by introducing the client to the Block Editor, guiding them through its features and functionality to ensure it aligned with their publishing workflow. To help them evaluate its suitability, we conducted a dry run, allowing them to experience firsthand how content management would work with the new system.

After receiving the client’s approval, we developed a detailed plan to migrate from Visual Composer to WordPress’s core Block Editor, leveraging Full Site Editing (FSE) capabilities. The client was satisfied with their existing design and preferred minimal changes. We honoured this by making subtle refinements to the design while keeping the overall structure intact.

To achieve greater control and flexibility, we handcrafted a custom Block theme tailored to their needs. This custom theme not only streamlined the website’s architecture but also allowed us to reduce dependency on plugins. Additionally, we explored developing a custom slider block, designed to meet RollingNames’ specific requirements while also being reusable for future projects.

Outcome

Better Editing Experience

The migration to the Block Editor significantly enhanced the editing experience, delivering a true WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) environment. Unlike Visual Composer, which often makes design and content management difficult to interpret and navigate, the Block Editor offers a visually intuitive interface. This streamlined experience makes creating, editing, and managing content easier, empowering the team to work more efficiently and effectively.

Cutting Down Plugins

The old website relied heavily on Visual Composer and numerous additional plugins to achieve the desired functionality. With the Block Editor, much of this functionality is now built into the core editor, making it easier to accomplish tasks without external dependencies. By leveraging Blocks, Patterns, and Customization options, we were able to reduce plugin usage by 35%, streamlining the website’s architecture and improving overall performance.

Improved Performance

Moving to Block Editor get more control over things and aid with performance optimization. Handcrafted Block Theme helped with controlling assets and cutting down dependency on plugins. Dogfooding slider also further helps have more control over performance. Migration helped with cleaning up the website in general which further helped with fast-loading websites.
