Modernizing Better Click To Tweet for the WordPress Block Editor

Better Click To Tweet had become one of the most widely used click-to-share plugins in the WordPress ecosystem. As WordPress introduced the Block Editor, the plugin needed to modernize its editing experience without disrupting millions of existing shortcode-based implementations. Alongside the editor transition, the product also needed a smoother onboarding experience and a commercial add-on that expanded functionality while creating a sustainable monetization path.

Project Highlights

  • Native Gutenberg block development
  • Backward-compatible shortcode architecture
  • Plugin onboarding wizard
  • Pro UTM add-on development
  • Easy Digital Downloads licensing integration
  • Block extensibility and custom block controls

Business Context

Better Click To Tweet helps publishers and marketers turn selected content into easily shareable posts.

Its existing shortcode workflow was reliable and widely used, but WordPress itself was changing. With the Block Editor becoming the default content creation experience, continuing to rely solely on shortcodes would increasingly make the plugin feel disconnected from the platform.

The challenge was not simply adding Gutenberg support. It was evolving the product without disrupting existing users or creating two separate systems to maintain.

The Challenge

Three connected areas needed attention.

Modernizing the Editing Experience

Existing users created Click To Tweet content through shortcodes. That workflow still worked, but new WordPress users increasingly expected visual blocks and native editor controls.

A new block needed to feel like a natural part of WordPress while continuing to support existing shortcode-based content and extensions.

Improving First-Time Use

The plugin required little configuration, yet new users did not always know what to do immediately after activation.

The client wanted a clearer onboarding experience that explained the core workflow, helped users get started quickly, and introduced additional capabilities without adding unnecessary complexity.

Expanding the Commercial Product

The product roadmap also included a premium UTM tracking extension for marketers who wanted campaign attribution on shared links.

That functionality needed to work consistently across both legacy shortcode content and the new Block Editor experience, with licensing and updates handled through the existing commercial infrastructure.

The Solution

Rather than rebuilding the plugin around Gutenberg, we extended the architecture that was already working.

A Native Block Built on the Existing Engine

We developed a native Gutenberg block for creating and configuring Click To Tweet content directly inside the Block Editor.

Instead of introducing a second rendering system, the block reused the plugin’s existing shortcode engine underneath.

This gave users a modern editing experience while preserving compatibility with existing content, functionality, and extensions. It also avoided maintaining separate shortcode and block implementations for the same feature.

Guided Plugin Onboarding

We introduced a lightweight onboarding flow inspired by established WordPress product experiences such as WooCommerce.

After activation, users were guided through how the plugin worked, its basic configuration, and the features available to them.

The result was a clearer path from installation to first use, while also creating a natural place to introduce premium functionality.

UTM Tracking as a Pro Add-on

We designed and developed a premium extension that allowed marketers to append UTM parameters to links generated by Better Click To Tweet.

The extension worked with both existing shortcode content and the Gutenberg block.

For Block Editor users, we extended the block sidebar with dedicated campaign tracking controls, allowing UTM parameters to be configured without leaving the editor.

Easy Digital Downloads powered licensing and plugin updates, giving the client a familiar foundation for managing the commercial add-on.

Operational Impact

The project allowed Better Click To Tweet to modernize alongside WordPress without forcing existing users through a migration.

Content created with shortcodes continued to work, while new users gained a native Block Editor experience. Because both interfaces shared the same underlying architecture, the product could evolve without maintaining two independent implementations.

The onboarding flow improved the path from activation to first use, while the UTM add-on expanded the product for marketing use cases and introduced a structured premium offering supported by licensing and automatic updates.

Most importantly, modernization happened without sacrificing backward compatibility.

What This Means for WordPress Product Companies

Major WordPress platform changes do not always require rebuilding a mature plugin from scratch.

For products with years of existing content and established user workflows, the better approach can be to preserve the proven foundation and build modern interfaces around it.

Better Click To Tweet gained a native Block Editor experience, clearer onboarding, and a new commercial extension while continuing to support the shortcode architecture its existing users relied on.

The result was not a replacement of the old product, but a practical evolution of it.
